What we do

Everything above the gutter line, and the bits that hold it up.

Most of what we do is on the pitched slate and tiled roofs that North Shields is built from, plus the flat roofs, dormers and extensions behind them. If you are not sure what your roof needs, ring Steven and he will come and look at it.

Full re-roofs

A complete strip back and rebuild, from the battens and breather membrane up. Everything comes off, the timbers get looked at, and the roof goes back on properly.

Slate roofing

New slate and reclaimed slate, laid to course. We take the trouble to match slate to the original roof and to the neighbouring properties, so a repair does not shout at you from the street.

New pitched roofs

Complete new pitched roofs on terraces and semis, including neighbouring properties done at the same time where it makes sense to share the scaffold.

Flat roofs

Flat roof replacement and rubber membrane work, including patching damaged sections rather than replacing the lot where the roof does not need it.

Chimney work

Taking down chimneys that are causing leaks, and making good the roof around them so the whole area is secure once the stack is gone.

Lead flashing

Replacing tired or damaged lead flashing around chimneys, abutments and valleys, and making sure the finished detail is genuinely watertight.

Guttering

Guttering renewed as part of a re-roof or on its own, so the water coming off the roof actually ends up where it should.

Roof lanterns and skylights

Roof lanterns and skylights formed, fitted and finished, including the plasterboard reveal so the opening looks right from inside the room.

Storm and impact damage

Repairs after falling masonry or bad weather, on both slate and flat roofs. We can put right large sections without replacing the whole roof.

Roof ventilation

Improved ventilation to the loft space as part of a re-roof, so the new roof does not trap moisture in the timbers underneath it.

Waterproof membrane

Breather membrane and felting laid under the finished covering, the layer you never see that decides how long the roof lasts.

Roof repairs

Smaller repairs on slate and flat roofs across North Tyneside, sorted without pushing you toward a full roof you do not need.

Roof lanterns and skylights

Daylight, and a ceiling that looks like it was always there.

Forming an opening in a roof is the easy half. The part that decides whether it looks right is everything after: the upstand, the flashing, the reveal and the finished plasterboard around the glass. We do the whole thing, so you are not left chasing a plasterer once the lantern is in.

About SGS

Steven, his team, and a scaffold outside your house.

SGS Roofing and Building is based on Cromwell Terrace in North Shields and works across North Tyneside. Steven is on the job himself, with the same team alongside him, which is why people tend to mention him by name when they write about the work afterwards.

Read our reviews and the same thing comes up again and again: people knew what was happening. Four out of five reviewers mention being kept informed, whether that is knowing which days the team would be on site or how the job was progressing. On a job where your roof is off and the weather is doing what the weather does here, that is most of the battle.

The rest is just doing it properly. Finding slate that matches the original and the houses either side. Turning up every day through bad weather. Charging a fair price and saying what it is up front.

SGS Roofing and Building were excellent from start to finish, removing a Chimney that was causing a leakage problem, plus extra areas that needed attention to secure the roof.A great job at a fair price ! I would highly recommend this company. Many Thanks

Used SGS roofing recently for a full overhaul on our double fronted terrace in North Shields. This included full strip back, installation of waterproof membrane, guttering, felting and flashing works, and improved ventilation to the loft space. Steven went out of his way to find slates that would be the best colour match to the original and neighbouring properties. Despite the poor weather Steven and his team were here everyday making sure the job was completed to the highest standard. Couldn't be happier with the results, service and reliability from SGS Roofing and would highly recommend them to anyone needing roofing repairs.

Damage had been caused to several areas of slate roof and flat roof by falling masonry. Steven and his team made an excellent job of repairing large sections of the slate roof and patching the damaged area of rubber membrane on the flat roof. They also replaced damaged lead flashing, making sure the final repair was watertight. Great service, friendly and helpful team and very reasonable price. Communication was excellent and I was always kept informed of when they would be on site. Would not hesitate to recommend.
